Two Stars

That evening, still alive,
We asked the sea about its secrets
And were surprised it did not hear us,
Or perhaps it was just pretending.

Mediterranean miracles,
The waves of the Adriatic Sea,
Cypresses and mimosas,
Crying insects and light bugs.

Soft like the Mediterranean Sea,
You were the scent of the summer.
You—that evening still alive,
That sea I still see.

The stars were too far and silent.
We screamed to get closer to them,
To break the silence,
To make them hear us.

We were the two loudest creatures
On the whole Mediterranean;
We screamed louder than all the insects and birds
Imagining we were two stars.
